know labs
non-invasive blood glucose monitor
the know labs gen1 device was designed to non-invasively measure physiological processes in the human body. the first implementation of the system is intended to function as a non-invasive glucose monitor. this breakthrough has the potential to improve the lives of all those with diabetes and pre-diabetes. although it is a research tool and not commercially available, know labs felt it was important for their researchers to have a refined, robust device produced in quantities to enable reliable, consistent collection of large data sets and also inform the development of future devices.
working closely with engineering teams at know labs and seattle-based igor institute, bould design developed the industrial design and mechanical design for the gen1 device and commissioned the production of a small quantity of enclosures and internal structural and shielding components. the teams met in seattle for a successful first build where assembled units booted up and passed qc tests on the first try.
the pebble-like industrial design reflects the function of being held in contact with the subject's palm or forearm. the soft ovoid form factor is topped by an antenna array that transmits and receives the rf signals. the stainless steel midplane component acts as the main structural and shielding component and an elastomeric foot provides grip and stability.
